Sailing for Causes

Every summer, Oregon area sailors gather on the water with a focus on raising funds and awareness for worthy causes. This year was no exception as SYSCO (Small Yacht Sailing Club of Oregon), the Free Bowl of Soup (J105) racing team and OWSA (Oregon Women’s Sailing Association) all organized their respective annual charitable sailing event.

June saw two SYSCO-sponsored races – a Friday night Beer Can race, followed the next day with the Dual Bridge Duel – both benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation for the third year in a row.

August yielded an epic and record-breaking year of donations for the Oregon Food Bank, as “the Soup gang” organized their annual beer can race and after-race party/fundraiser for the 12th year standing.

And this month, OWSA partnered for the second time with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for a charity sailing weekend in the fight against blood cancer.

In total, these three events raised over $36,000 in 2015 and will help many people in need.

On behalf of those who will ultimately benefit from these three events, thank you Portland sailors for your generosity!
