What’s Up in July

More summer sailing to come. Following are the OCSA July updates:

CSRA Beer Can Race-July 7th: Sailors from CRSA (Columbia River Sailing Association) have agreed to run the Beer Can Race on Saturday, July 7th at 5:00pm, in lieu of OWSA. Stephanie Walker of S/V Wildheart and Scott Stevenson, with the help of Susan Holtorf, will be out and ready to get the race underway. Come out and join the fun!

In a change from last year Beer Cans are now scheduled on Saturdays at 5:00pm to avoid Friday night traffic.

More Beer Can Races-July 14th, 21st & 28th:  The rest of the Beer Can races will be held as scheduled on Saturdays in July at 5:00pm (July 14th, July 21st, and July 28th). Sponsors are RCYC, PYC & RCYC respectively.
 
SYSCO Summer Evening Series concluding-July 10th & 12th: No SYSCO evening racing the week of July 4th. Happy 4th to everyone! The SYSCO Summer Evening Series will finish up Tuesday, July 10th, and Thursday, July 12th. The SYSCO Summer Series BBQs will follow the racing on Tuesday, July 10, and Thursday, July 12, and mark the end of the Summer Evening Series. The BBQs are held on the lawn at Tomahawk Bay Marina. SYSCO supplies the food and soft drinks; bring your own beer and wine.
 
SYSCO Twilight Summer Evening Series beings-July 17th & 19th: Weekday racing continues with the Summer Twilight Series starting on July 17th and July 19th. Whidbey Island Race Week is shortened this year. There is no break in the series to accommodate Race Week.
 
ISC Monday Night Racing continues in July.  Check out their website for details www.islandsailing.org.
 
SYSCO Delta Cruise starts July 28th and continues through Sunday, August 5th.  Contact SYSCO for details cruise@syscosailing.org
 
SYSCO Short Handed Soaker-July 31 & Aug 2: For those staying in town, SYSCO is running the ever popular and super fun, Short Handed Soaker Races. This is a single race held the evenings of Tuesday, July 31, and Thursday, August 2. Boats will race short-handed as follows on their respective fleet nights:

  • Single-hand – All boats under 24 feet (e.g. Cal-20s, Ranger 20s, Catalina 22s, Venture 21s).
  • Double-hand – All boats 24 to 30 feet (e.g. Martin 24s, J-24s, Merit 25s, Melges 24s, PHRF, and Cruising)
  • Triple-hand – All boats over 30 feet (e.g. J-105s, PHRF, & Cruising).

Additional crew are permitted to be on a boat being raced shorthanded to serve as rail-meat or ballast as long as the extra crew does not hand, reef, steer, or touch a control line. Additional crew members are permitted to fire super soakers and water cannon at other boats in their class after the starting signal.
 
Early August Events:
The HRYC Double Damned Race, WSC Al Morris Regatta and the ISC Beer Can Race are all scheduled for August 4th.  Check out the OCSA Race for details.
