April 2021 E-Blast

Portland Yacht Club (PYC)

PYC’s Opening Day Regatta is coming up fast (April 10 & 11) and we’d really like to see you out there! Registration is available at SailPDX. Be sure to check out not only the SI’s (there have been some “interesting” changes this year); but also the Amendment to the SI’s (Sailing Instructions) posted by PYC for this event. You and your crew are invited to PYC following each day’s racing, to enjoy some food and drink with your fellow racers. Preliminary results will be posted at the club following each day’s racing, and we plan to award trophies following Sunday’s racing. We hope you’ll join us!

Live Sailing Race Podcast: Dock Talk!

Tune in to the Live Show about SYSCO’s Spring Series races on April 20 and 22. There will be four shows, in six weeks of racing, for your viewing pleasure and there will be something for all skill levels. Even if you don’t race, the live podcast is interesting and you can learn more about sailing on the Columbia River! How fun is that?!

April 25th’s show will feature the racing topic “Which Way is the Wind Blowing?” with a discussion from 7-8 pm, followed by an open chat after the show.

The first segment features race rule, race definition, race flags, racecourse and river/weather conditions for that week’s races, as presented by different people, in their own words, from the local sailing community. The second segment features race reviews by women who raced that week! The third feature of the April 25th show is a deeper dive on a race tip, as presented by Michael Morrissey, owner and skipper of the Merit 25, s/v OB1.

These Dock Talks are sponsored by OWSA, and produced and directed by Carisa Bohus, who races on Wild Women (Martin 24) and Hoodview (Ranger 20). For Zoom link information, for more information, or if you would like to be on a future show, please email docktalk@owsa.net

Small Yacht Sailing Club of Oregon (SYSCO)

Are you short-handed and thinking about sailing your big boat in the SYSCO Cruising Class this year? Due to COVID, many short-handed boats moved to Thursday’s cruising class, so please consider signing up instead for Tuesday’s No-Fly Sails racing class. Longer (>30′) and faster boats are being moved to Tuesday nights to help balance the fleets. If there are enough boats with no-fly sails PHRF ratings, SYSCO can score a PHRF sub-class. For more information, feel free to contact SYSCO’s Race Captain.

The SYSCO Race Clinic will have lots of information for new sailors and old salts, so plan to Zoom in on April 15th, starting at 1830 hours (6:30 PM). For the Zoom link, please contact SYSCO’s Race Captain.

The SYSCO COB Challenge on April 17th starts at 1300 hours (1:00 PM) is a great opportunity to practice crew overboard skills. To register, sign up here. Consider signing up also for SYSCO’s Spring Evening Series, which begins April 20th and 22nd, at the same link. SYSCO races are free to members, so be sure to renew your SYSCO membership. And, while you’re at it, don’t forget to join OCSA, too!
