Aug/Sept Sailing News

Don’t miss these current and upcoming events in the Columbia River sailboat racing community.

Watch the movie Maiden
Still playing in area theaters, this documentary about the first all-women team to compete in the around-the-world yacht race is an amazing story.  In 1989 women were still excluded from the top levels of sailboat racing.  This is the story of a young British woman and the team she assembled who demolished that barrier.

SYSCO One-Design Races on September 7
One Design round the buoy races.   Short (20-30 min) round the buoy races.  3-5 races total depending on conditions.  Need three or more boats to have a class start.  Could be up to eight one-design classes (J-105, Melges, Martins, Merits, J-24, Cal-20, Ranger 20, Catalina 22). Possible to combine flags (e.g. Merits and J-24s) if several fleets sign up.  Lowest score wins.  If five or more races there will be one throw-out race.  Register at SailPDX.

RCYC Long Distance Race –  September 14 & 15
This is a two-day race consisting of one leg down river to St. Helens/Sand Island on Saturday and a return leg on Sunday.  Most competitors moor at the Sand Island docks for the night where there is an awesome party.  Register and details at SailPDX.

Crazy Wigs Beer Can Race –  September 14
Not going on the Long Distance?  Then come out for this fun Beer Can.  Dust off your crazy wig and sport it during the race.  Then head to the Sextant for the post race party.  This race is sponsored by the Oregon Women’s Sailing Association.  Just show up at Buoy 14 at 5 pm and monitor VHF 72.

SYSCO One-Design Match Racing on September 21
Match Racing of one-design sailboats that are equal in speed.  Need four boats to have a match racing class (but cannot be more than four).  If more than four boats in a class are interested, the top four boats from the Sept. 7 one-design regatta will be selected.  Boats that did not sail in Sept. 7 race can still be eligible.  Races will be round-robin (not elimination) with each boat sailing three races.  Lowest score is the winner.   This is the first time SYSCO is attempting match racing and there are several logistical challenges.  Interested boats are encouraged to register early at SailPDX.

PYC Robert A. Smith Regatta –  October 5-6
