August News-Blast

We just squeaked this out before September begins! This sailing season certainly has been a piece of work; but that being said, I’ve still enjoyed a few great sails in good breeze this year, even if I’ve missed more than my fair share of “race nights” on the river.

Your OCSA Board will be starting the work soon to line-out our 2021 Racing Calendar, chock full of races, regattas, events, socials and educational opportunities, which includes with the new US Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing (USS RRS) coming out for 2021. We are certainly hoping to be able to go back to “business as usual” in a handful of months.

Odds and Ends

OCSA 2020 Awards Nominations
In July, the OCSA board voted to green light the nomination and awarding of the annual OCSA Trophies like any other year (minus the OCSA Participation & Performance trophy for obvious reasons), as 2020 did involve a LOT of volunteer hours and creativity to pull off. So, at this time, nominations are now open for the OCSA perpetual trophies at this time.

Please share and use the link to nominate appropriate candidates for the OCSA trophies (nominees do not have to be an OCSA member to qualify! And YOU don’t have to be an OCSA member to nominate anyone!). We will be accepting nominations through Monday, Oct 5.
Note: The form is a nomination, not a vote; but the OCSA Officers would love to know who YOU think deserves recognition in 2020 for their contribution to our racing/sailing community, so let’s hear from you!

  • Sailor of the Year– This trophy is for the individual that has gone above and beyond the call of duty in their contributions to the sailing community.
  • Good Times– The sailor who always seems to have the most infectious good time.
  • Welcome Slough– A new sailor who has put forth extra effort to be involved in the sailing community. And,
  • US Sailing Sportsmanship– Awarded to the individual who has exhibited corinthian sportsmanship both on and off the water.

OCSA Tropical Awards Banquet UPDATE
In the August the OCSA Board meeting, your board voted unanimously to cancel the in-person Tropical Awards Banquet for 2020, and instead we are converting the annual OCSA General Membership Meeting into a virtual gathering. In this virtual gathering (which we are hoping to keep to under 60 minutes), we will be voting for OCSA’s slate of officers for 2021, awarding the 2020 OCSA perpetual trophies, and hearing an informative and entertaining keynote presented by sailing coach, seminar speaker, North U instructor, and seven-time winner of the J24 Nationals,  Andrew Kerr. Date and time still TBD. More details to follow.

Still Open OCSA Officer Position for 2021
OCSA is still seeking an interested volunteer for the position of OCSA Vice Commodore for 2021. If you or someone you know would be a good fit and available for the position, please feel free to contact commodore@sailocsa.org or vicecommodore@sailocsa.org to talk about this important volunteer opportunity further.

2020 OCSA VC Lilli Matzke featured on KOIN 6!
Our very own Vice Commodore, Lilli Matzke, hosted AJ from KOIN 6 on an Island Sailing Club Catalina 22 for an episode of AJ in Action: Sailing the Columbia River, watch the segment here. Way to GROW THE SPORT, Lilli!!

  • SYSCO One-Design Regatta, Saturday Sept 19
The September 19 One-design Regatta is on. The SYSCO racing committee have put their heads together and come up with a race plan. This regatta will be a series of 3-4 short races held on Saturday afternoon between 1-4:30 pm.  The racing will be open for all one-design fleets and there should be 3 boats registered to qualify as a fleet.
