SYSCO Fleet Night is going virtual (again). SYSCO fleets should meet ahead of time to elect your Fleet Captain and Fleet Race Captain. More information on the program and the Zoom info will be sent to fleets prior to the meeting.OCSA Race Management Clinic: Everyone is invited to attend this FREE workshop!
Sat, February 26, 10 amAttention all race captains, fleet captains, and volunteer PROs: the Race Management Clinic is a MUST to attend. Sailors who will be running races, as well as any others who expect to serve on a Race Committee boat are encouraged to attend. This is more important than ever since most clubs no longer are hiring a paid PRO to make the important decisions and racers need YOU to make the proper call!
The three-hour clinic will focus on the planning and coordination involved in managing a sailboat race. You will have the opportunity to learn about topics such as course options, how to factor wind strength, fleet traffic issues, timing, how and when to shorten a course, and more. Speakers will share practical advice from what they have learned over the years. To prepare for the Clinic you may want to review the Fleet Captain Guide for SYSCO Racing. Bring your questions!
DATE: Saturday, February 26
TIME: 10 am to 1 pm, with questions after as time permits.
LOCATION: Rose City Yacht Club, 3737 NE Marine Drive, Portland (location change)
FEE: There is no fee for the workshop.
RSVP: Pre-register free by Jan, OCSA Commodore
Proof of COVID vaccination is required to attend. 30 max/social distancingBe in Charge of a Race. Set the Course. Become a PRO. Better yet – learn from a current PRO. You are not alone. The well-trained Race Committees will be assisting you. Simply orchestrate their positions.

Pacific Northwest Offshore Race
May 12-15, 2022
From the entire Corinthian Yacht Club of Portland and Schooner Creek Boat Works, our title sponsor, we’d like to extend an invitation to register for the 2022 Pacific NW Offshore International Yacht Race.
We also want to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to those of you – skippers, crew, support teams – who participated in last year’s race (24 boats) and finished in Port Angeles. You helped us keep the unique history of this race alive during a time of dramatic uncertainty. In that regard, we so appreciated the Port Angeles Yacht Club for stepping in as the substitute finishing club and for all their hospitality. This year, barring any extraordinary new drama, we’re headed back to Victoria. We’re also back on the usual dates of (May 12-15, 2022) two weeks before the Swiftsure International Yacht Race. We hope you all will continue to support this race as you have in the past and sign up today.
While there still may be some logistical hurdles that we’ll all have to jump over, know that all of us here at CYC will do whatever it takes to make the process easy for you. Moreover, the folks in Ilwaco are already preparing to up their game from last year, which was already an incredibly supportive performance, as any of you who were there for the start will attest.
So, sign up today.
If you have questions or concerns, send them directly to Denny Damore, CYC Pacific NW Offshore Race Captain and CYC Commodore, at: race.captain@cycportland.org.
See you in Ilwaco.
Sailing Instructors Needed
Passion Yachts is actively looking for instructors and is hosting a qualification clinic, Feb 28-Mar 4. Interest in sailing lessons continues to increase and we expect demand to exceed what we can offer with our current crew of 13 instructors. Passion Yachts offers top-of-the-line boats on which to instruct. Current fleet boats include J/70, Hunter 216, Beneteau First 22, Catalina 34 mkII, Beneteau 36.7, and Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44i. The season is March thru October with classes typically offered Thursday/Friday and Saturday/Sunday. We also offer evening graduate cruises on Wednesdays and private sails.
Why would you help?
Teaching new sailors is a critical component of promoting the sport and building the community. Racing can be intimidating; however, having race mentors on our crew has helped make it feel more approachable. There are so many mentors offering their knowledge and skills for free, perhaps some might be interested in getting paid to do what they love!
For more sailing instructor information, contact Captain Jenn or call 503-289-6306.
Oregon State Marine Board Request
Greetings boaters!
This is an invitation to report on your boating activity (or lack of) from January 1-December 31, 2021. I know a lot of time has passed, and it may be hard to remember; but if you are willing, it would be extremely helpful to complete the 2021 Survey; so the agency can better understand when and where people are boating. We greatly appreciate your past and continued participation in these surveys.
Follow this link to the 2021 Survey.
Thank you again for being involved in this important survey! Sharing your boating experiences helps the agency better serve all Oregon boaters and carry out our mission to serve Oregon’s recreational boating public through education, enforcement, access, and environmental stewardship for a safe and enjoyable experience.
Sincerely,
Joe Severson
