Whether for Oregon or Washington, the Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boater education classes that fulfill these state’s requirements. Check out their Boating Education Classes page for details, or sign up for the next course scheduled locally: When: Sunday, Feb 24th, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Where: Portland Yacht Club (PYC), 1241 NE Marine Drive Portland OR
Fees: $12 (cash) per person for the course; an additional $10 is required to submit the requisite information to either Washington or Oregon states to receive your Boater Education card
Who: Class is offered to anyone over 12 years of age
Food: Coffee, tea, juice, milk, water and breakfast rolls will be provided, as will a short lunch break. Lunch can be purchased from PYC or feel free to bring a sack lunch.

All boaters need to carry a boater education card when operating powerboats (including personal watercraft, or any motorized watercraft) greater than 10 hp. This includes sailboats under power. Law enforcement officers can issue citations for non-compliance with the Mandatory Education Law; fines are $142.Youth 12-15 also need a boater education card when operating boats 0-10 hp alone. When operating a motorboat over 10 hp, a card-holding adult (16 or older, 18 for personal watercraft) must be in direct supervision (on-board, and able to immediately take corrective action in case of emergency).
