January/February Sailing News

Happy New Year!  While 2019 just began, it’s not too early to begin thinking about the upcoming sailing season.  There are several events in January and February that you won’t want to miss, as well as some administrative details to attend to, like …
OCSA Membership
Join OCSA or renew your membership for only $30 annually and you’ll receive the 2019 OCSA Racebook as part of your membership. Go “print-free” (and save a tree or two), with the electronic-only versions, and receive a $10 discount on your membership! Laminated Course Charts (updated for 2019**) are also available for $2 each, so be sure to pick one up at the Portland Boat Show (1/9-1/13), CYC Pray for Wind Party (2/17 ), SYSCO Fleet Night (2/26) or during business hours at North Sails or West Marine. You must be a member of OCSA to be eligible to enter most Columbia River racing events

January 9-13: Portland Boat Show, Expo Center

Come to the Portland Boat Show to see the latest in boating products, visit yacht club booths, chat with your local sailing businesses and see your friends. OCSA membership (including the 2019 OCSA Racebook, $30) and laminated Course Charts ($2 each) will be available at the SYSCO booth (#539 – cash or check only).

February 9-10: Safety at Sea Seminar, Marshall/Luepke Center Vancouver WA
The Sailing Foundation is offering the Safety at Sea Seminar on February 9 and 10 in Vancouver, WA. This training course has been described as “an informative and entertaining training program both in the classroom and hands-on, the seminar is designed to enhance your sailing skills as a crew member and make you, your boat, and crew safer. Experts have tailored their presentations to give you as much information as possible in the two-day experience. Days are long, but you’ll come out of each with a better understanding of the many topics covered.” A few spots are still available, so save yourself a trip to Seattle and take the class right next door! For more information, go to The Sailing Foundation

February 16 & 17: US Sailing Race Officer Workshop, Willamette Sailing Club

Most races in Portland are now run by the individual fleets. Do you feel ready? Is your fleet looking to you to manage Race Committee when it’s your fleet’s turn? Do you want to be better prepared to help? Improve your knowledge of race management with this valuable opportunity! Better yet, if you are a member of OCSA, pass the Club Race Officer test and serve as a Principal Race Office (run a race in Portland, exclusive of Sailing on Sunday or Saturday beer can races) in 2019, OCSA will refund your registration fee. February 17: Pray for Wind (and Bring a Friend) Party, Portland Yacht Club
Join us for the CYC (Corinthian Yacht Club of Portland) Pray for Wind (and bring a friend!) Party on February 17th, 3:00-7:00 pm at PYC. Open to anyone interested in sailing, this year’s event will offer a chance to get together, hear (or tell) a few tall tales, and meet new (and old) friends. Information tables and representatives from participating clubs will be on hand to share what’s planned for the coming season. Everyone is welcome! Bring your friends, your kids, your curious neighbors and/or the person at your local grocery store, and help us celebrate all that is good about sailing in Portland, as we look to grow participation, not just racing; but for all the events that serve to bring sailors together on the mighty Columbia River.

Hope to see you at these events!
