July Sailing News

Hard to believe it, but the sailing season is flying by and we are half way through. Plan now for upcoming events so you don’t miss out.

PYC Summer Regatta is this Saturday & Sunday
The weather looks like it will be great this weekend; the bar and deck at PYC (Portland Yacht Club) will be open after each day’s racing. An all-you-can-eat Taco Bar will be available and awards presented Sunday afternoon. Event shirts will also be available for purchase following the trophy presentations. Register for the race on the SailPDX Notice Board before July 12, 6:00 pm. The race begins Saturday, July 13 at 1400 hours and Sunday, July 14 at 1300 hours.

Beer Cans
These are casual races designed to introduce skippers and sailors to sailboat racing and provide a fun, goofy race for experienced crews. The RCYC Fly Your Flags Beer Can Race was held on June 29.  Nine boats came out to enjoy a beautiful evening sail and a bunch of sailors then retired to the Sextant for dinner and drinks.

The next Beer Can Race is the PYC Family Night Beer Can Race on July 20, so don’t miss the fun! Gather your parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, siblings and any other kin for a fun evening of sailing. Then relax on the veranda at Portland Yacht Club to watch the sunset. Details here.

The following Saturday, July 27, is the RCYC Rum Run Beer Can Race. A one bottle of rum entry fee shall be handed to the Race Committee or brought to the Rose City Yacht Club clubhouse after the race. Details here.

The Cal 20 Mardi Gras Beer Can Race is August 3. Make the race a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade. Costumes, beads, wigs, makeup, props, music – anything goes! Laissez les bons temps rouler! Post-race social will be held at the Sextant.

Twilight Series starts next week
Don’t forget to register this week for the SYSCO Summer Twilight Series that begins next week and runs through August 29. Register at SailPDX and be sure to pick the correct series (Tuesday or Thursday).

SYSCO Short Handed Soaker is on August 1
All boats are invited to come out on Thursday, August 1, for this super fun race. Boats are to be sailed short-handed as specified in the Notice of Race. Additional crew are permitted to fire water cannons at other boats after their start. This is a free event but boats are requested to register so that classes and courses can be determined. Register here.

Check out the Ranger 20, s/v Little Jewel, as she was spotted finishing under a double rainbow on June 27!
