June 2021 E-Blast

SYSCO lifted COVID restrictions, PNW Offshore is one week away and if you still need a laminated 2021 OCSA Course Chart, they are hot off the presses and back in stock for $2 each! 😀 Happy Summer sailing, Everyone!

OREGON CORINTHIAN SAILING ASSOCIATION (OCSA)

As we (finally) enter the racing season, please remember to make sure your 2021 OCSA membership is up-to-date. Per event Notice of Races (NORs), “All entrants must be current OCSA members.” Join OCSA or renew your membership for only $30 annually, and you’ll receive the 2021 OCSA Racebook as part of your membership. Go “print-free”, with the electronic-only versions, and receive a $10 discount on your membership (and a tree or two)! For questions please e-mail Jan Burkhart, OCSA Vice Commodore.

Have you checked out our photo gallery on SailPDX lately? There’s some fun pics from the archives and some recent ones, too. Feel free to share your Portland race-related photos with us by clicking this link.

Re-known rules expert, Dave Perry, delivered an incredible Racing Rules Webinar via Zoom which covered the new 2021-2024 Racing Rules of Sailing on March 13th. Topics included the new rules, followed by a participant Q&A where he answered the participants’ questions on upwind, downwind, starts, rounding … you name it! We have received quite a few requests, from people who were unable to attend, asking if they can purchase the recording. We heard you and will be offering a link to the two-hour recorded session for $20; so stay tuned, as it will be available on SailPDX soon!

Finally, in order to hopefully accommodate a larger group, the Andrew Kerr Educational Seminar, sponsored by OCSA, has been moved from June 26th to August 8th. Stay tuned for details!

RIVER NAVIGATION SURVEY

A new River Navigation Survey is available, requesting input on how we use the River and the future of a new Interstate Bridge. For information on the project and to add comments, please follow this link. Share your thoughts no later than June 30th and be part of future changes to our waterways!

IT’S BEER CAN RACE SEASON!

The OCSA member clubs are pleased to extend an opportunity for skippers to compete in these not-so-serious, somewhat whimsical, and just-for-fun, beer can races from May through August. Skippers new to racing are especially encouraged to participate in these fun events. The start signal for all these races is 5pm and details can be found on SailPDX.

  • Sat, June 5th (yes, today!), ISC “WATER GUNS” BEER CAN RACE: Bring out the water canons and do battle during the race.
  • Sun, Jun 13th, SYSCO “SINGLE-HANDED” BEER CAN RACE: Test your mettle in single-handed racing. After a first start for the less courageous boats, the second start will be for single-handed boats. Gather your fleet mates or skippers from similarly matched fleets and create some exciting boat-to-boat competition.
  • Sun, June 27th, SYSCO “GROW-THE-SPORT” BEER CAN RACE: SYSCO is requesting one-design, PHRF, Level, and Cruising boats to invite friends and others interested in experiencing a fun sailboat race. Skippers will be asked to register for the race at least 2 weeks in advance of the race date via SailPDX. Each boat will be asked to carry one or more individuals that may be familiar with sailing but have seldom raced on the Columbia River. All boats are encouraged to take at least one novice sailor.

ROSE CITY YACHT CLUB (RCYC)

All eligible boats are invited to participate in the RCYC Jack Gainer Memorial Medium Distance Race to be held on the Columbia River. This is a one-day regatta, to be held Saturday June 19th, with a single 12 to 15 nautical mile race. For more info or to register, go to the SailPDX Event Notice Board.

SMALL YACHT SAILING CLUB of OREGON (SYSCO)

The Summer Evening Series continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 8th. Check out the weekly results on SailPDX!

OREGON WOMEN’S SAILING ASSOCIATION (OWSA)

Come out and pit your racing skills against other competitive women racers during the OWSA Women’s Regatta, presented by the Oregon Women’s Sailing Association. The Regatta will be held on June 28th, with the first warning signal starting at 6:30. All entrants and crew must be women. Women participating in the OWSA Race Clinic are pre-registered; however, all other interested women participants can register at SailPDX. Registration is $30 and the deadline to register is June 23rd.
