June 2022 E-Blast

Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association (OCSA)

Safety Equipment Requirements (SERs)
Just a reminder that each boat sailing on the Columbia River is responsible to ensure that the proper safety equipment is available onboard and in good working order. For Columbia River racing, the OCSA SERs (Safety Equipment Requirements) “Nearshore” requirements apply. The requirement created by US Sailing and OCSA General Sailing Instructions are also required by the United States Coast Guard, which are also included in the Coast Guard permits received by OCSA to hold racing events on the Columbia River. If you have specific questions, feel free to reach out to your Fleet Captain, a well-seasoned local sailor, a local marine supply company or boatyard.

Note: OCSA will no longer be printing and lamenting the OCSA Course Charts. Print a copy of the Course Chart yourself and either laminate it (available at most copy stores), or slip it into a plastic sheet protector and tape it with clear packing tape for a waterproof version.

Columbia River Yachting Association (CRYA)

Martin Slough Entrance Hazard
Due to multiple crashes near and in the Martin Slough entrance channel, from nearby I-5, fuel and oil spill booms have been set to contain any contaminants from heading downriver. The Boom has an anchor ball that sits about halfway into the channel from the mainland side. When transiting through this area, leave the anchor ball on the mainland side (meaning, go between the ball and the island). For now, we have plenty of high water and it is positioned that probably will be OK anyway. CRYA remains in touch with the agency that installed the boom and it will likely remain in place for at least another month. In light of the pending holiday weekend, please make sure to let your club members know. Enjoy a safe Memorial Day weekend!
