KOIN 6 Sports Reporter Goes Sailing

Brian Watkins, a producer and photographer at Portland’s KOIN-TV channel 6, contacted OCSA through SailPDX in early August with a proposal. They have been shooting segments on things people can get out and try during the Summer months. AJ McCord, a sports reporter for the TV station, has been featuring a variety of sports, like mountain biking, windsurfing and river rafting. He wrote, “We would love to shoot a story with her learning to sail.” Well, we jumped at the chance and things were set in motion!

Following is a summary by Lilli Matzke, OCSA Vice-Commodore, of her afternoon sail with AJ & Brian:

“Yesterday’s filming was great. AJ had an amazing time, was willing to learn and try out much herself. Lots of fun and lots of laughs in our matching white pants. Air date will be in two weeks [on Koin 6 at 4pm – details to follow.]

 

Sadly we weren’t able to stay for the [SYSCO Summer Twilight Series] race. Had to head back in as the racers started [to] come out on the river. AJ [had to] cover the Blazers game. However I talked so much racing and [about] our beautiful community that they (AJ and Brian) want to do a special/separate segment on the racing community… So fingers crossed, because all together this is fantastic exposure for sailing in PDX.”
