March 2021 E-Blast

Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association (OCSA)

Following substantial rules changes, which came to light post-2021 OCSA Racebook publication, the online versions of the 2021 OCSA Racebook, Sailing Instructions and NORs (Notices of Race) have now been updated and uploaded to the SailPDX Notice Board and supporting Race Documents page. There are still a few minor updates needed to our site; but it’s nearly fully updated for the 2021 season, thanks to our diligent (volunteer) webmasters for your COUNTLESS hours of hard work to make this happen!

It’s also not too late to sign up for the OCSA-sponsored Racing Rules Webinars with Dave Perry, scheduled for next Saturday, March 13th! While there weren’t many changes made in the 2021-2024 Racing Rules of Sailing, the majority of time with Dave will offer the opportunity to ask questions, both regarding rules and tactics, and get answers from one of sailboat racing’s leading experts! For only $12, attendance is a no-brainer, right?

Dave Perry is well known for his enthusiastic and engaging teaching style for sailors of all ages, as well as highly respected for his deep knowledge of the sport of sailing–particularly rules and tactics in fleet, team and match racing. Dave has extensive experience coaching sailors from Optis through the US Olympic Sailing Team. He is one of the sport’s leading rules experts, serving on the US Sailing Appeals Committee and acting as the Rules Advisor for several recent America’s Cup teams as well as the US Sailing Team at the 2008, 2012 and this year’s Olympic Games being held in Tokyo.

Dave’s depth of knowledge, fun style and openness to answering questions have always drawn a crowd in Portland, and he’s recently perfected how to bring his same engaging and effective teaching style to the Zoom platform! Join us – come check it out and learn!

Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC – Portland)

Due to ongoing restrictions of public gatherings, CYC made the decision to cancel its annual Pray for Wind event scheduled originally to be held today, March 7th, as well as the March 14th Chili Cook-Off which typically would have concluded CYC’s 2020-2021 Sailing on Sundays races.

CYC is wrapping another season of Sailing on Sundays with the final race next Sunday, March 14th! Come on out and have some good sailing fun, rain or shine!

Rose City Yacht Club (RCYC)

Please join fellow sailboat racers for the first race of the new season on March 20th! This year’s Frostbite Regatta hopes to bring keelboat racers for an afternoon of buoy racing. Weather and set-up permitting, RCYC would like to offer up unusual racecourses to challenge both the crews’ minds, as well as their ability. Come on out to enjoy seeing other boats, wave back and forth, then get down to some fun racing.

The entry fee has been dropped by $2 per boat, so please register early. For more information and to register, check the SailPDX Event Notice Board. Please note that, due to COVID, the after-race social at RCYC has been canceled.

OREGON WOMEN’S SAILING ASSOCIATION (OWSA)

OWSA presents the 2021 Women’s Race Clinic, held between May 17th through June 28th. This multi-session event is designed to introduce women with intermediate or advanced sailing skills to the sport of RACING! Please note that COVID safety guidelines will be followed for all in-person sessions.

Session 1 will be a virtual meeting, via Zoom, and will cover what to expect when you reach the racecourse, including the Race Committee (RC) boat, flags, signals, racecourse board, determining your boat assignments and much more.

Session 2 will be an on-the-water meet-up on May 23rd with your teammates and skipper to allow you to get to know each other and for a bit of racing/sailing practice, followed by participation in the OWSA-sponsored “Tropical Dreams” Beer Can race that evening!

Session 3 heads back to the virtual classroom for an introduction to the 2021-2024 Rules of Racing, presented by our own local (Area L) US Sailing umpire and judge, Craig Daniels.

Sessions 4, 5 & 6 will be back on-the-water for practice sessions addressing the start, mark roundings and building skills to work together as a team. Each session will include an optional virtual post-race debrief, via Zoom, held two days later for questions and answers.

Session 7 will conclude the Race Clinic, on June 28th, with participation in the OWSA Women’s Regatta! How cool is that?! 😎

This Race Clinic is open to all women, with a limited number of spots available to NON-members of OWSA; so register soon and feel free to send any questions to OWSA’s Race Captain.

Fair winds,
