Modified Racing in July

As we continue to manage COVID-19 safety requirements, modified sailboat racing continues with caution:

  • PYC Summer Regatta, Sun, 7/12
It’s on! Check out the the flyer for details.
  • SYSCO Twilight Evening Series, T/Th, begins 7/14 & 7/16
SYSCO is proceeding cautiously with the
Twilight Evening Series; however, the SYSCO Board is still very concerned that races are put on to ensure the health and safety of the sailing community and do not contribute to the spread of COVID-19.

While the Nation has been trying to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus is continuing to spread in Oregon. SYSCO held the Summer Evening Series as an experiment to see if we could hold racing events safely. For that series, trophies were eliminated to reduce competitive pressure and a set of guidelines for competing boats and Race Committee were established. The latter includes a requirement that teams or crew must be cohabitating individuals or crew must wear face masks. Although most boats have been cooperating, we are concerned that there appears to be a number of boats not following these guidelines.

SYSCO has decided to offer the Summer Twilight Evening Series as a non-trophy “fun” series, under the same guidelines for the Summer Evening Series. Please don’t be over-competitive (leave lots of room at mark roundings, for example); because some boats are racing with fewer-than-optimal crew, or even greenhorns. In addition, SYSCO will be monitoring compliance with the guidelines and will cancel the series if compliance continues to be a problem. So please, make an extra effort to follow the Governor’s Guidance on outdoor activities.

If you have questions, please contact Gregg Bryden, SYSCO Race Captain.  If you want to participate, please register soon on the SailPDX Notice Board.

Stay tuned for more racing updates!
