June goings-on so far…

ISC “Water Gun” Beer Can Race
We had a great time at the ‘Water Gun’ Beer Can Race. Thank you everyone who came out for an unintended yet well coordinated backwards start (unfortunately no pics were taken) and a chase for the reaching mark down the river. Well done ‘Flounder’, sneaking up on committee while the crew was raising anchor, for a surprise soak!

SYSCO Single Handed Beer Can Race
It was a picture perfect day for the Single-handed Beer Can race last Saturday.  Lots of sunshine, winds from the NW 10-15 mph, and the current at a tolerable 2 knots. The Race Committee set a perfect line with bumpers lining the rim of the RC boat anticipating fending off some out-of-control single-handed sailors.  All that was needed was racers willing to test their mettle against the elements. Three boats showed up, one of the them the elegant Iris out of PYC (portland yacht club) who took first to finish line honors followed by OB1 and then an Island Sailing Club vessel happily wrestling his vessel around the course. Hopefully more boats will show up for the remaining Beer Can races as summer sailing (and weather) is in full swing.

Notable things coming up…

RCYC Medium Distance Race
Rose City Yacht Club invites all eligible boats to participate in the Jack Gainer Memorial Medium Distance Race to be held on the Columbia River. This is a one-day regatta with a single 12 to 15 nautical mile race on June 22, first warning signal is scheduled for 1400 hours.

Enter online at www.sailpdx.org before the registration deadline of 5:00 PM local time the day before the race. An after race social, including food and drink, will take place at RCYC immediately after racing is concluded.

CGRA Volunteers nNeded
The Columbia Gorge Racing Association is looking for volunteers to help out with several big regattas in the Gorge this summer. First up is the RS Aero North American Championship, June 28-30. We are still in need of crew for the race committee, mark boats, and shore support team. It’s a terrific opportunity to see some world-class sailboat racing in a world-famous big wind venue, and a chance to work alongside the friendly CGRA team to see firsthand how an international level event is conducted.

You can sign up here to volunteer for this or any other 2019 CGRA events, and please feel free to contact me if you have questions or need further information. Hope to see you out in the Gorge this summer!

RCYC “Fly Your Flag” Beer Can Race
The RRS (Racing Rules of Sailing) prohibit flying a flag while racing, but that rule is waived for this race, the last beer can before July 4th. Fly the biggest baddest flag or ensign you can find, or as many flags as you can fit onboard. Fly the national ensign or yacht ensign, along with national flags of crew members, club burgees, specialty flags, etc. This race is sponsored by Rose City Yacht Club. There will be a post-race social at the Sextant.

OCSA Volunteer Opportunities Section
Our community only works thanks to our strong volunteer heartblood. To support this, OCSA has an online resource with  sailing-related opportunities for potential volunteers to share and/or peruse. OCSA members, and anyone with some available free time, are strongly encouraged to get more involved in the various available volunteer opportunities. Check it out! https://sailpdx.org/resources/volunteer-opportunities-2/
