September 2021 E-Blast

We hope you’d enjoyed a good season of sailing and racing! A big thank you to SYSCO for another fun season of racing on our mighty Columbia. Get out your foulies, CYC’s Sailing on Sundays (SOS) is about to begin…

OREGON CORINTHIAN SAILING ASSOCIATION (OCSA)

After long deliberation and careful consideration, the OCSA Board voted to postpone the annual OCSA Tropical Awards Party and Banquet. With the ongoing COVID pandemic and the quick spread of the Delta variant, we want to keep you and each other safe. We very much want to place the emphasis on “postponed” and are hopeful to host an event in Spring, collaborating with all club representatives.

However, the OCSA Board also voted to greenlight the nomination of the OCSA Awards and Trophies, just like any other year. Nominations for recipients of the OCSA perpetual trophies are open at this time:

  • Sailor of the Year: This trophy is for the individual that has gone beyond the call of duty in their contributions to the sailing community
  • Good Times: The sailor who always seems to have had the most infectious good time
  • Welcome Slough: A new sailor who has put forth extra effort to be involved in the sailing community
  • U.S. Sailing Sportsmanship: Awarded to the individual who has exhibited Corinthian sportsmanship both on and off the water.

Check out the extensive list of previous OCSA trophy recipients! And, while you’re there, nominate those who you deem as deserving recognition for their outstanding contribution to our sailing community. Nominations will be accepted until Monday, October 18th. Feel free to share the link, as well. Nominees do not need to be OCSA members to qualify, nor do you need to be to submit your nomination.

On to more fun news…

CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB OF PORTLAND (CYC)

Sailing on Sundays Racers,

Well, Fall is about to fall and most of the SYSCO series are done, which means it’s close to the time where we forego yard work to sail on Sundays. Registration is now open for 22 Sundays of fun, sun and, oh yeah, sometimes rain and drift; but…well…as I’ve said every year and actually just said, it’s better than yard work.

Racing starts in 3 weeks on Sunday, September 19th. There’s a break for PYC’s Robert A. Smith Regatta on October 3 and then full speed ahead until several breaks around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Please also consider signing up for the Race Committee and get a first-place finish for that day. The openings go fast, so click on the link and get your spot.

See you on the river,
Denny Damore
CYC Sailing on Sundays Race Captain

ROSE CITY YACHT CLUB (RCYC)

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the RCYC Race Committee decided it would be unwise to hold the Long Distance Race to St. Helens, a party and an overnight stay at the dock, then to race back. Consequently, the traditional event is cancelled for this year.

Instead, however, we like to race and to have others race. As a replacement for this year, we will hold a two-day regatta closer to “home” on the River and will have a long race each on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th. Follow this link for the revised NOR.

SMALL YACHT SAILING CLUB OF OREGON (SYSCO)

While Summer weekday evening racing has concluded, there’s still more racing scheduled for September; so don’t put your boats away just yet! The SYSCO One-Design Races will be held Saturday, September 18th at 1300 hours. These will be short 20-30 minute round-the-buoy races for one-design classes with short starting lines, fast roundings and a great way to continue to improve your boat-handling and starting skills. Last year, we got 4 races in for some beautiful September weather. It is free for SYSCO members; but all skippers are welcome. Be sure to register soon and we hope to see you on the water.

OREGON WOMEN’S SAILING ASSOCIATION (OWSA)

Let your imagination run wild for an “Out of This World”-themed Beer Can Race! Flying Saucers, Death Stars, USS Enterprise, Cone Heads, Aliens, oh my! Who knows who will turn out for this fun-filled race?! Your creativity will not go unnoticed, as your Race Committee will be watching closely to decide which boat is the farthest “Out of This World”. A FABULOUS PRIZE will be awarded, so stay tuned to channel 72 to hear the winner announced sometime during the race! Come on out, Saturday, September 25th — the 5-minute warning signal will begin at 4 pm. NOR’s and more info can be found on the SailPDX Notice Board.
