SOS & COVID

Sailing on Sunday Racers:
As sailors we are inherently accustomed to change – weather, breeze, sea state, broken boat pieces – and as such we adapt as needed to keep the boat on its feet and the crew safe. This most recent spike in Covid cases from 100,000 per day to 183,000 per day in one week is one such change affecting Sailing on Sundays. This exponential growth in cases has alerted the governors of all three west coast states to issue new guidelines and restrictions. The following link regarding Governor Brown’s is included for your convenience and reference:  https://www.opb.org/article/2020/11/13/oregon-governor-kate-brown-covid-19-restrictions/

Based on all the foregoing, the CYC Board has decided that this Sunday’s race will proceed with the following notes, recommendations, and caveats, and with the understanding that we will be monitoring the situation weekly and making decisions based on the current state of this rapidly evolving pandemic, including the possibility of canceling races for a period of time – so stay tuned to this Google Group and the Notice Board:
  • Please follow the Governor’s and CYC’s Covid Guidelines as included on the SailPDX Notice Board and the OPB link provided above.
  • Under Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 4, Decision to Race* as a skipper you are solely responsible for the decision to race and, implicitly, for the safety of your crew – act accordingly.
  • Some skippers are choosing to only double-hand their boats. Consider the number of and your relationship to the crew that you do include given bullet #1.
  • Given this late notice – the Governor’s decision came down yesterday – please pass this mail along to any skipper or crew that might be affected.
Thank you in advance for being responsible so that we all can continue to enjoy the sport we love.

See you on the river.
D
